Performing Arts at Jones

Jones Elementary Performing Arts Program

Jones Elementary School has a rich history of perseverance, love and creativity. As we approach our school’s 90th anniversary and the 70th anniversary of our desegregation, we celebrate the brave and immovable courage of the students and their families who fought for equality in education and beyond.

Today, this legacy of resilience and artistic spirit continues at Jones Elementary. Nestled in the heart of Buchanan Street, a historical spot known for its rich cultural and artistic impact on Nashville, is the perfect location for nurturing the next generation of artists and leaders.

At Jones Elementary, the arts is more than just an extracurricular activity - it's an integral part of our students' physical, social and emotional development, and it is treated that way, too. Our dynamic programs in music, movement and drama are building confidence in students that will benefit for a lifetime.

Rhythm & Movement: Music Meets Physical Education

With over 20 years of experience in physical education, wellness, dance and fitness, Dr. Gerald Davis II integrates Music and Marching Band with Physical Education to create a holistic learning experience. His curriculum combines rhythm, movement and teamwork to enhance students' artistic and physical growth.

  • Kindergarten - 2nd Grade: Students explore rhythmic movements and body coordination through interactive activities and group collaboration
  • 3rd - 5th Grade: Marching drills evolve into choreographed routines with instruments, culminating in group performances that foster confidence and teamwork.

This program provides students with a well-rounded foundation in movement and music, helping them develop both discipline and creativity while having fun.

Drama Instruction With Nashville Children's Theatre

Jones' has a wonderful partnership with the Nashville Children's Theatre(NCT), which is bringing professional and fun drama instruction to kindergarten and 3rd-grade students. Jackie Komos from NCT works with students every week during the school day. Through interactive workshops and live theater experiences, students gain exposure to storytelling, stage performances and self-expression.

NCT also offers select Jones students full scholarships to their Drama School. These scholarships support students who show talent and dedication to drama while training with professional actors and perform on the NCT stage.

  • Kindergarten: Explore storytelling through NCT's creative drama and picture book play curriculum
  • 3rd Grade: Build ensemble skills, practice improvisation and engage with theater concepts shaped by their own personal interests.

After-School Choral Program with Sangtuary

Students in Jones' after-school choral program explore and perform secular songs performed in the gospel style while learning about music arrangements and genre history. This program creates a creative outlet for self-expression and artistic development because being part of the chorus isn't just about singing - it's about giving students a voice and a space to grow as an individual.

  • Encourages vocal confidence and performance skills
  • Strengthens communication, emotional resilience and teamwork
  • Fosters a sense of community and belonging with the students
